The use of e-bikes on the Craigieburn Trails is permitted as follows:
- Only power-assisted cycles are permitted; specifically, they must be pedal-assist only; i.e. no throttle
- Power-assisted cycles are defined by the NZTA to:
- be designed primarily to be propelled by the muscular energy of the rider;
- have a motor with a maximum power output not exceeding 300W
Currently, the considered opinion is that pedal-assist e-bikes get riders up hills and often along trails at a more constant rate than they otherwise might be able to, but have little extra impact on trails in the down direction.
This policy may be reviewed if conflicts between trail users start occurring and cannot otherwise be mitigated.
